Part 1: Diaphragmatic-Abdominal Breathing

Your diaphragm is a membrane positioned mid-body separating the chest from the abdomen. When we breathe in via the nose, the diaphragm expands drawing air into the lower lungs causing the abdominal area to move out and downwards. When we breathe out the diaphragm and abdominal area deflate, pushing the breath upwards as we exhale out of the mouth.

Diaphragmatic-abdominal breathing is beneficial as it builds positive self-management outlooks such as:

  • Connecting breathing and speaking in ways we can control (particularly when nervous)

  • Provides continuous fuel for our voices, so that we always sound confident.

  • Reduces nerves by diminishing stress hormones

  • Provides a healthy foundation upon which confident speech behaviours such as pitch, pause and pace can be built
