This Designing Powerful Data Visualisations course gives you the knowledge to use a range of publicly available and free to use visualisation tools, such as Power BI, which will help you gain further insight and meaning from your datasets.
This course is specifically designed for those with a background in data visualisations, to enable them to use Power BI to design much more powerful and compelling visualisations.
Through interactive workshops and the use of laptops, learn how to practice using digital visualisation tools on public sector related datasets.

|About the Chair: Mark Wilcock
|Mark is an independent consultant and trainer. He specialises in the analysis, visualisation and reporting of financial and economic data. He has worked for several clients including Credit Suisse, BNP Paribas, Nomura and Barclays. He has received Microsoft’s Most Valuable Professional (MVP) award for the last two years. He has a MA in Natural Sciences from Cambridge and an MBA from Imperial College, London. He is the organiser of London Business Analytics Group, a very popular community meetup group.
It has held over 50 free events in the last four years on subjects such as machine learning, data visualisation, ethics of big data, personalised medicine and climate change. Mark is a regular speaker at conferences on data science, machine learning and data visualisation. He has technical expertise in Microsoft’s Data Platform and Power BI.

Creating Impactful Visualisations
In hands-on exercises delegates will practice techniques to build interactive visualisations from public sector datasets using Power BI
- Slice data: slicers filter our dataset to focus on areas of interest
- Apply slicers and look at the different types (eg. list, slider)
- Navigate hierarchies with drill down
- Practice drilling down from top level summary to bottom level detail
- Utilise cascading sliders
- Drill through: jump from a summary dashboard that focuses on the nitty-gritty details of an item
- Build in interactions between visuals

- Utilise storytelling techniques
- Create tailored dashboards to follow through a logical narrative – especially useful in presentation to others

- Use colour to signify a value that requires attention
