Paul was employed by the Fire Authority for 27 years. For the first three years in Emergency Planning before transferring into the Service Personnel Department. He became Absence Manager in 1998 with responsibilities including Occupational Health, and became the Service Occupational Health Manager in 2003.
He has led the Service OH Team to the BBC Big Challenge Healthy Workplace Award; BiTC Health Workplace Award in 2009 and 2010, Engage Awards Best Employee Health and Wellbeing Strategy 2016, and the Service have won RPSH Awards in 2011 and 2015 as part of the Sefton Consortium. Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service attained the Workplace Wellbeing Charter with Excellent in all categories in 2012.
In the area of mental health the Service signed the Mindful Employer Charter in 2009, and the Team gained a Highly Commended recognition in 2016 and 2017 and Winner of the award in the Mental Wellbeing of Staff category in 2017 at the Positive Practice in Mental Health Awards.
Paul is also Chair of both the Northern (England) Fire and Rescue Service Occupational Health Group and the Merseyside Regional Occupational Health and Wellbeing Group.
Before joining the Fire Authority was employed in the area of Personnel and Training for Community Programme, Employment Training and Youth Training organisations.
