Max Coates

Programme Leader, Institute of Education

Max leads the MA Leadership at the London Centre for Leadership in Learning (Institute of Education).

Max Coates was a secondary head for 12 years. He has worked for the University of Bristol Post Graduate School of Education and St. Mary’s University College. He now leads the MA Leadership at the London Centre for Leadership in Learning (Institute of Education) .

Over the last few years he has worked extensively in the area of leadership, emotional intelligence and mentoring and coaching both in the UK and abroad. Of note has been a range of work carried out with local authorities. He has also been a lead consultant for the Network of Black Professionals and is the Educational Design Consultant an Trustee for Chapel Street, a social regeneration charity and academy sponsor. A significant recent development has been the use of motivational diagnostics to understand and extend teams.

He has worked extensively in other countries. A current project is linked to raising educational achievement for 2.3 million children in Colombia. His work has also included work for The Leadership Development for Schools (Republic of Ireland) and is a visiting lecturer at Trinity College, Dublin. Published works include books on personalizing learning, and citizenship and a recent book, The Constant Leader, which explores surviving and thriving in leadership. The latest book which he has edited ‘ Shaping a New Educational Landscape explores potential future developments within education and society and management.
