Lewis has been a Member of the Scottish Parliament since it was first established in May 1999. He was re-elected as MSP for North East Scotland in May 2016.
Lewis has served on the Labour Front Bench since his appointment as Deputy Minister for Transport and Planning in March 2001. He is currently a member of the Public Services and Wealth Creation team in the Shadow Cabinet.
Other policy areas on which Lewis has spoken for Labour at Holyrood include enterprise, energy, tourism, infrastructure, capital investment, housing, rural development, environment, water, lifelong learning, health and community care and justice. He has served on parliamentary committees for audit, education, culture, sport, health, the economy, energy, tourism and the Referendum Bill.
Lewis currently serves as Deputy Convener of the Culture, Tourism, Europe and External Relations Committee which is currently responsible for scrutinising government policy put in place to secure Scotland’s future post-Brexit.
