Julie Walton

Former Head of Hospital Inspections, CQC

Julie is an experienced senior professional, with considerable experience and expertise in all aspects of health and social care regulation particularly the inspection, registration and promotion of quality improvement across NHS and independent health care organisations.

Julie has a regulatory career that has spanned 25 years working in successive regulatory bodies including the Healthcare Commission and latterly the Care Quality Commission, with emphasis within the last 12 years on the regulation and inspection of hospitals across the acute and mental health care sector, as well as community and ambulance services.

She has had a diverse range of management and leadership roles have been successfully held with the most recent being that of Head of Hospital Inspection specialising in the comprehensive inspection and follow up of the acute hospital sector; as well as a number of senior management roles responsible for a range of inspection teams covering regional and national geographical areas, such as the National Hygiene Code Team, which brought NHS organisations within the scope of the Care Standards Act legislation.

Working as a Head of Hospital Inspection for almost three years has included around 20 NHS Trust comprehensive and follow up inspections with over 30 hospital sites. Responsibilities in the role involved all aspects of the preparation, planning, leading of inspections and progressing reports through the quality assurance process to publication. In addition, the relationship management with provider organisations, stakeholders, such as NHS England, NHSI (previously the Trust Development Authority), Commissioner Groups, MPs and patient/public representatives.
