Dr Nick Woodier

Patient Safety Improvement Lead, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust

Nick is a doctor who stepped away from frontline clinical care to pursue a career path in patient safety, a route that very few doctors follow. He has postgraduate training in human factors and now applies this to the retrospective review of incidents and proactive improvement for safer systems.

Nick is currently working with Dr Suzanne Shale in the development of the Human Factors Analysis and Classification System (HFACS) for its use in acute hospital settings; he is also familiar with the use of AcciMaps as a tool in incident analysis.

Nick is an effective healthcare educator with particular expertise in the use of simulation within the clinical environment to explore the influencing factors on individual and team performance in practice. He is also undertaking a PhD exploring  how healthcare can use near-miss reporting to explore system resilience.
