Is The Public Sector Ready For Remote Working?

What do these four things have in common?

More than just buzzwords, these styles of working are predicted to be the future of the way both employers and employees alike go about doing business. According to a Virgin Media Business survey, 60% of office-based employees will regularly work from home by 2022. Will the public sector be a part of this 60%? In this blog post we explore how the benefits of remote working could be applied to the public sector.

A Digital Society

Technological advancements have transformed the way we work, live and play. As society adopts and adapts new types of technology, public sector organisations need to adjust their services to reflect this. It might be fair to say that the perception of the public sector is seen as more ‘traditional’ and ‘archaic’ which shouldn’t be the case due to the new age of digital transformation. Implementing a remote working strategy would be a progressive step towards bringing the public sector into the more modern way we live our lives.

Accessible Communications

With the rise of the digital office, organisations can work more easily in collaboration through tools such as email, Skype, Google docs, Dropbox and various apps like Asana and Slack (to name a few). Technology has made it almost effortless for people to stay connected, and with the right resources to enable you to keep an open communication and do your job it’s viable to work from home, from a coffee shop or even somewhere more exciting like a sandy beach with a cocktail to hand.

Organisational Attitude

As with anything new being implemented in an organisation, change only works if everyone is on board. Making sure that all team members are well-informed of new processes is the key to ensuring success. When it comes to remote working, a culture of trust needs to be created otherwise it won’t work; employers need to be able to trust that their remote workers are getting the work done, and employees need to be able to trust that their managers are keeping them involved despite the distance from the office.

Employee Wellbeing

In addition to the business benefits of having remote workers such as having less physical office space and low utility costs, there are many benefits for employees. Having a remote working strategy can help to improve the work-life balance, save the busy and expensive commute, and Better Remote Work reports that it can reduce sick leave by more than 60%. Since remote working is an appealing perk, you’re also more likely to attract the top talent who are looking for opportunities where they can do what they love from wherever they want.

So, will work now be where the Wi-Fi is? Although remote working won’t necessarily work for every profession across the public sector, the benefits for 9-5 office workers are a positive step towards retaining current employees and attracting the younger generation making their way into the workplace.
