What’s the workshop?

Effective Briefings and Submissions is one of the most popular skills courses run at Understanding ModernGov that focuses on personal development. It was first run in 2013, since then we have delivered 13 successful training events.

By writing effective briefings, you explain complex information in a clear and compelling way, present ideas to diverse audiences and influence key decision makers. However, writing these briefings to a high standard can be a challenging and time consuming task for all public sector professionals.

This training day aims to teach core skills such as reading quickly and identifying key facts, how to lay out facts on a page and ensure they are noticed, how to construct key sentences, informative paragraphs and useful documents to create the kind of impact that public sector organisations and professionals require.

Who teaches the course?

Sue is an experienced communications professional who trains a number of high-profile organisations to enhance their communication. Sue has worked as a regional and national newspaper journalist prior to setting up a full-service communications company, now established for 25 years.

Sue currently works with a wide number of public and private sector organisations to help improve writing skills and wider communications, with a range of training including production of communications strategies, face-to-face briefing, communicating complex information, presentation, media handling and key messaging and a variety of advanced writing and verbal presentation techniques.

Her recent clients include Aston Martin, Fujifilm, BP, LA Fitness, G4S, Hanover, Norfolk County Council, British Airways, Marks and Spencer, Devon County Council, Citizen’s Advice Bureau, The General Dental Council, the Wine Institute of California, Shelter and The Law Society.

She has also worked with many government departments and has recently undertaken particular projects with the Home Office, HMRC, HMT, MOD, DfID, the FCO, the Information Commissioner’s Office and the Insolvency Service.

Here is a taster of some of the consistently good feedback we get for our Briefings and Submissions training:

The most thoroughly applicable course I’ve ever done, with a skilled (and entertaining) instructor. The day flew by, but I learned more than expected” – Executive Support Officer, Goldsmiths University of London.

Excellent training event – great trainer and presentation with lots of relevant info. Great value for money” – Business Manager, Judicial Appointments and Conduct Ombudsman.

I really enjoyed this training and stayed engaged throughout the day – something that doesn’t always happen at training events! It provided a good balance between individual, table work and group discussion” – Doctoral Loans Policy Advisor, Department for Education.
