Welcome Back – A quick look at 2018 for Understanding ModernGov

Welcome back to the office and Happy New Year from all of us at Understanding ModernGov!

We know you will probably be reading this with tired eyes, a considerably lighter wallet, an extra inch on the waistline and the memory of that extra glass of prosecco on New Year’s Eve giving you that hangover all over again, am I right? To ease you into the first week of 2018 we thought we’d introduce you to some of our brand new upcoming training courses and speakers that we are most excited about, so relax and give yourself five minutes off of catching up with all the unanswered emails that were waiting for you this morning.

Optimising Alternative Provision in Education – Central London

We are delighted to introduce this brand new training course running on the 20th of March. Were you aware that only around 1 per cent of young people in state alternative provision receive five good GCSEs? Off the back of this shocking statistic there is a growing demand for alternative provision and concerns about the service, our course is ideally timed to ensure that providers are able to effectively commission high quality alternative provision.

Delegates attending will benefit from five highly experienced education experts on the day as well as participating in a practical workshop that will see them leaving with a personalised action plan to implement everything they have gained from the day.

The Chair:

We are delighted to welcome experienced education practitioner, Seamus Oates OBE, as the chair for this course. Seamus is CEO of the TBAP Multi-Academy Trust. TBAP MAT runs nine AP and Special Academies, a Teaching School Alliance and school outreach services in four London boroughs, across Cambridgeshire and in the North West of England.

A National Leader of Education (NLE), Seamus twice led the Bridge AP Academy to Outstanding Ofsted status as its headteacher. He believes passionately in the personalisation of learning and in ensuring a chance for every child. In 2017, Seamus was recognised in the Queen’s Honours List for his services to education and was awarded a CBE at Buckingham Palace.

Effective Reading – Central London

The first thought that might go through your mind when you read the title of this course is surely reading is a simple skill that all professionals possess? Think further and you’ll probably start to remember times that you were swamped with deadlines and had piles of documents to sift through, how much time this took you that you really needed to be using to do other things? Or what about when your boss asks for an overview of a series of handouts they haven’t had time to read themselves, you have to highlight key facts making sure you don’t miss anything out which can be a difficult task when there are highly complex documents with lot’s of jargon. By improving reading techniques and learning new highly advanced ones you will be able to read complex materials quickly, succinctly and accurately. Saving yourself time and stress. In turn this can actually improve your general decision making skills and accelerate processes.

delegates will benefit from a really interesting day where they will understand the psychology behind reading, learn how to effectively read different  types of documents, such as emails, policy documents, reports and executive summaries. Learn how to quickly gain information from text and gain tools to decipher jargon and complex language.

The Chair:

This course is led by one of our most popular trainers Sue Calthorpe, Sue works with a wide number of public and private sector organisations to help improve wider communications. Her recent clients include Aston Martin, Fujifilm, BP, LA Fitness, G4S, Hanover, Norfolk County Council, British Airways, Marks and Spencer, Devon County Council, Citizen’s Advice Bureau, The General Dental Council, the Wine Institute of California, Shelter and The Law Society.

She has also worked with many government departments and has recently undertaken particular projects with the Home Office, HMRC, HMT, MOD, DfID, the FCO, the Information Commissioner’s Office and the Insolvency Service.

Effectively Providing Additional Support for Learning – Edinburgh

This brand new course, running only in Edinburgh is in response to the changes coming into force in January 2018. The Education Scotland Act 2016 is making amendments to the Additional Support for Learning Act and extends the rights of children with additional support needs.

With Enable Scotland’s 2017 report “#IncludED in the Main?!” finding that less than half of young people with a learning disability believe they are achieving their full potential at school, it is critical that education professionals ensure that they are getting it right for every child.

The Chair:

We are delighted to welcome SallyAnn Kelly, Chief Executive of Aberlour, SallyAnn has more than 25 years of experience working in children’s services. Prior to joining Aberlour as CEO, SallyAnn worked for Barnardo’s Scotland, first as Head of Operations, then as Acting Director of Barnardo’s Scotland. She took on a role as Senior Manager for the National 3rd Sector GIRFEC Project in 2013.

SallyAnn has worked on a number of strategic working groups at Scottish Government level and has a particular interest in the protection of children, promoting children’s rights and ensuring looked after children are supported to achieve their full potential.  She also has a keen interest in developing Leadership capacity across organisations delivering services to children.
